Marikina Polytechnic College is now officially a “green flag” in sustainability commitment as UI GreenMetric places the College at 76th, 827th, and 1,364th ranks in the Philippines, Asia, and global standings, respectively.

This year’s theme “Advancing Sustainable Development Goals in Higher Education: Stories from Our Institutions and Communities” saw the participation of 1,754 institutions from 105 countries for its 15th edition. The Results and Awards Ceremony held on December 5 at the National Chi Nan University in Taiwan ROC and livestreamed on Youtube recognized outstanding institutions for their performance on sustainable initiatives and environmental commitment. The complete list of the official rankings can be viewed and accessed via Overall Rankings 2025 – UI GreenMetric.

Participating universities are scored and ranked based on 39 indicators in six criteria: Setting and Infrastructure (SI), Energy and Climate Change (EC), Waste (WS), Water (WR), Transportation (TR), and Education and Research (ER). Numeric data is collected from the survey that UI GreenMetric provides to a participating institution.

MPC’s debut in the UI GreenMetric comes one year after it formalized its sustainability initiatives through the Creating Sustainability iMPaCt campaign launched on December 16, 2024. Some of the College’s green milestones, which are also anchored on the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations, covers achievements in these areas: Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure; Sustainable Cities and Communities; Responsible Consumption and Production; Quality Education; and Climate Action.

College president Dr. Rene Colocar, who has recently entered his second term, said in a statement that the ranking “signifies not only excellence in academic activities, but above all, giving great importance to sustainable development. This is one of the objectives of the institution towards becoming a full-fledged National TVET University in the future.”

The UI GreenMetric, the first World University Ranking on Sustainability, was founded by Universitas Indonesia in 2010. Its primary purpose is to promote sustainability among higher educational institutions in the world. Ranking is done yearly.
