National foot sizing system for Filipinos? DOST-PTRI and Marikina Polytechnic College are taking the initial steps
On 29 March 2023, DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Marikina Polytechnic College (MPC) at the TELA Gallery, Bicutan, Taguig City, to initialize the joint pursuit to venture more into shoe and footwear R&D, developing novel technologies that will innovate the local footwear industry.
In its goal to revitalize the local footwear value chain, the DOST-PTRI implemented the SAFATOS Program, which will innovate the local footwear industry by upskilling the technical capabilities of local footwear designers, developing sustainable textile materials for footwear, and creating a textile-footwear ecosystem.
In its mission to provide smart and green technologies through research, MPC has established the Footwear Innovation and Technology (FIT) Research Laboratory to support footwear design and prototyping research, provide technical services, and offer training on design, prototyping, and marketing.
The partnership between the two agencies aims to develop water-repellent uppers for casual footwear and establish a national foot sizing system that is fit for Filipinos.
